Brief Profile of the Department

The Department of Material Science and Engineering is one of the new teaching departments included under the XII Five Years Plan sanctioned by UGC. The Department of Material Science and Engineering at Tripura University, Surymaninagar, established in the year of 2016 and going to start its journey with the first batch in the month of August 2016. The unique feature of the department is it is the only institute in North-East region of India, offering the Master of Technology (M. Tech.) course in ‘Materials Science and Engineering’. At present, the department will offer the four-semester ‘M. Tech’ programme with sanctioned intake capacity of 15 students.

The main focus of the teaching and research in this department is centered on interdisciplinary area to achieve worldwide attention and appreciation. This unique stream in engineering helps students to gain technical knowledge of various kinds of materials like metals, semiconductors, ceramic, polymer, and composite through material characterization and its structure – property relationship. A special focus will be concentrate on the emerging nanostructure materials. Materials Science and Engineering also encompasses study of various metallic, inorganic and organic materials having numerous applications in various industries viz: Nuclear, Aerospace, Cryogenic, Petrochemical, Marine, Defense, Electronics, Renewable Energy, Biology and Medicine etc. Currently, the focuses of department activities are multi-directional with an emphasis on education, research and industrial consultancy as well. Apart from teaching, the department aims to produce technocrats who possess besides necessary technical knowledge, human and social values, leadership qualities, and high degree of confidence and technical creativity.

The course curriculum has been designed taking into consideration the recent developments in the wide areas of Materials Science and Engineering. The curriculum of M. Tech programme includes two semester course work and two semester project work to synthesize student’s knowledge in relevant areas of engineering.

At present, Department of Materials Science and Engineering features three faculty members with expertise in frontier areas of research. The faculty members have contributed towards the publication of more than 35 research papers in international journals.
